M3 Local airspace drill: Ann Arbor area

For each spot, use the sectional to answer these questions. Assume a Part 107 flight at or below 400 ft AGL. Ground elevation is given, so you can convert MSL to AGL (AGL = MSL minus ground elevation).

Spot 1: The Diag, University of Michigan campus

Approx. 42.2770 N, 83.7382 W. Ground elevation about 880 ft MSL.

  1. What airspace class is at the surface here?
  2. What is the ceiling of that airspace in MSL? In AGL?
  3. Is there Class B airspace overhead? If so, what is its floor?
  4. Do you need an airspace authorization to fly at 200 ft AGL at 10:00 on a Tuesday? At 22:00?
  5. What is the highest altitude LAANC will approve here?
  6. Besides the FAA, whose permission do you need to fly here?

Spot 2: County Farm Park (Platt Rd, Ann Arbor)

Approx. 42.2554 N, 83.7017 W. Ground elevation about 815 ft MSL.

  1. Surface airspace class:
  2. Ceiling of that airspace in MSL: In AGL:
  3. Class B overhead? Floor in MSL and AGL:
  4. Authorization needed at 200 ft AGL during tower hours?
  5. LAANC maximum altitude here: Why is it lower than at the Diag?

Spot 3: Lillie Park South, near Ann Arbor Municipal (KARB)

Approx. 42.2239 N, 83.6979 W. Ground elevation about 860 ft MSL.

  1. KARB field elevation:
  2. KARB tower hours (local): What is the airspace when the tower is closed?
  3. Class D ceiling in MSL: In AGL over this park:
  4. Class B floor overhead, MSL and AGL:
  5. Authorization needed at 300 ft AGL at 09:00 Saturday? LAANC maximum here:

Spot 4: Ford Lake Park, near Willow Run (KYIP)

Approx. 42.2090 N, 83.5776 W. Ground elevation about 715 ft MSL.

  1. KYIP field elevation:
  2. Surface airspace class and tower hours:
  3. Class D ceiling in MSL: In AGL:
  4. What airspace sits directly above the Class D here?
  5. Authorization needed? LAANC maximum here:

Spot 5: Flodin Park, Canton (under the KDTW Class B shelf)

Approx. 42.3141 N, 83.4656 W. Ground elevation about 675 ft MSL.

  1. Surface airspace class:
  2. Class B floor overhead in MSL: In AGL:
  3. Do you need an authorization to fly at 400 ft AGL? Why?
  4. Heritage Park, about 2 miles southwest in Canton, has a different answer to question 3. Why?

TFR case: Michigan Stadium on a home football Saturday

Approx. 42.2658 N, 83.7487 W. Ground elevation about 840 ft MSL. Kickoff 12:00.

  1. What restriction applies, and where do you find it?
  2. Radius and altitude of the restriction (give the altitude in AGL and approximate MSL):
  3. Time window for a 12:00 kickoff, assuming the game ends at 15:30:
  4. Can you use LAANC to fly at County Farm Park (about 2 NM east) at 13:00?
  5. How would you get permission to fly inside the restriction? ---
